I just finished Dennou Coil about five seconds ago. I think my brain is about to collapse from marathon[ing] the last ten episodes. That was way too much for my mind to process. Well, at least we got our happy ending. I was expecting to get at least a little hint that Yasako started dating Haraken but we got a Densuke illusion instead. Hell, even Fumie and Daichi got their moment.

Final Thoughts

If I forget my frustration about how 90% of animation was everyone running, Dennou Coil was a great watch. No really, it’s hard to believe anime like it exist whenever I think of Geass. Running aside, my second complaint had to the be slice-of-life filler episode right smack in the middle of the series. Random much? I mean, why the hell did they have to pause the plot so abruptly for frikken filler episodes? What’s worst is that is was finally getting interesting!

It was really hard to force myself to watch through the entire series. I can’t help but want to give myself a pat in the back for how patient I was. The pacing reminded me slightly of Ghost Hound with the whole “it only LOOKS like nothing’s going on” mood. The only difference was that Ghost Hound kept me entertained with the weekly plot twists. Dennou Coil didn’t get to that point until after the three or four filler episodes.

Dennou Coil is basically this: “If you have the patience of a God and get through 16 episodes of virtually nothing happening, you’re rewarded with on-the-edge and action (as well as running)-filled episodes!”

Man, if a friend hadn’t told me that it gets good after the filler I would have given up. I’ll admit the Beard episode was epic with its INTERPLANETARY WAR!

What is up with all the gold I’m digging up from Spring 2007 anime anyway? Sheesh. I’m shocked at myself for not noticing Oofuri and Dennou Coil was airing at the time. There I was watching Lucky Star and Hayate no Gotoku as if that’s all there was. Then I go finding the epicness of TTGL, the fangirl-factor of Oofuri and the deepness of Dennou Coil. I’m shocked crap like StrickerS was around when those anime started airing.

Okay, time to wrap it up. [Spoilers ahead?]

Dennou Coil was an overall great anime. By the end Dennou Coil leaves you with this “my brain hurts but it was awesome” feeling all over. I loved how everything slowly built up without giving you to much information. A lot was foreshadowed from the start, but Dennou Coil managed to keep the important details secret and you confused until the end. I found myself unable to predict things further than in the episode itself. I’ll admit, by episode 24-25 everything cleared up and nothing was a surprise in the final episode.

One of the things that surprised me the most was that the Pink Mizzet belonged to Takeru and that he was Sosuke’s brother. One thing that didn’t surprise me the least bit was Sosuke being the main antagonist. Oh I knew he was the bad guy from the minute he appeared at the end of episode I-don’t-remember-anymore. I blame Yusa!

In other aspects, the music is Dennou Coil is really stunning. I was hooked on both the OP and ED from the start. Even the BGM’s were perfect for setting mood. Especially in the running scenes (ugh). The BGMs reminded me to a certain point about Kingdom Hearts. Or maybe it was because the Illegals had be going “HEARTLESS!!” at first. Animation-wise, the style was pretty weird. Something called “full limited” last time I checked wiki … not that I really understand the concept.

I’m really satisfied with how the anime ended. It tied all the loose ends really nicely. I would have wanted to know what happened to Sosuke but alright, there’s just that.

As I said before, Dennou Coil starts off really well but then as we approach the middle things get boring. Then suddenly we get filler. Normally, a person would’ve given up there but if you’re able to push on then you would have watched a great anime.

(Now to find an anime with less running …)
