Meet my giant Spring 2009 preview folks! I think I’ve been working on this on average two hours a day for three weeks now. The Spring season tends be massive and extremely interesting so I tried my best in gathering information on most of the series I featured here. As usual, I left out most OVAs and Films. The only ones included are the ones that I, personally, am interested in. These are all series that are airing in either April or May because March is halfway over. I did put in TRC and La Corda D’Oro purely because they haven’t aired/been released yet … and because I’m looking forward to both.
A little news bit; as I said, I’m going to stop consistently blogging anime episodes because it’s not my way of doing things. I’ll blog when I want and what I what. I should make that my official policy or something. Plus, with how busy I’ve been lately, dedicating myself to my blog would be suicide. Of course, I’m not the least bit happy I’ve been ignoring Death by Moe at all. That’s why, I took the time to prepare this post. It’s the least I can do to myself and to those who visit.
Oh and here’s a little something I found on good ol’ Youtube: 2009 Spring New Anime Introduction
It’s a great video to get all the information on the new series’ in a nutshell. The downpart is that you won’t find it as useful if you can’t understand the moonspeak. Still, you’ve got a basic summary, the air date, cast and staff information as well as images or trailers.
SPRING 2009 ANIME
-
Tsubasa Chronicle OVA: Shunraiki Volume One ~ March 17th 2009
Summary: Animation production by Production I.G. It’s the continuing of the previous set of Tsubasa Chronicle OVAs “Tokyo Revelations”
Comments: After the OVA, I always thought TRC would’ve been better off animated by Production I.G rather than Bee Train. Tokyo Revelations was great. I loved it much more more than the manga (sorry CLAMP, but it’s starting to stretch) and even way more than the anime series. Obviously, I’m waiting for this with impatience.
-
Kin’iro no Corda (La Corda d’Oro) ~ secondo passo ~ March 26th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN
Summary: Hino Kahoko continues to improve her skills at the Seiso Academy participating in music competitions with the help of Lili, the music fairy, the students from the music department, and a new blond charming character. (taken from ANN)
Comments: There are only three reverse harem series I actually enjoyed. Ouran High School Host Club, Saiunkoku Monogatari and La Corda D’Oro. Obviously, I’m going to watch this. I haven’t gotten my dose of colorful non-angsty bishies for a while and I miss hearing a bunch of my favorite seiyuus in one anime. When’s the last time I heard Jun Jun‘s moe voice in an anime? I don’t think I’ve heard it ever since Code Geass. Then there’s Daisaku whom I haven’t heard since Junjo Romantica either.

Sengoku BASARA ~ April 1st 2009
Official Site ANN Wiki Trailer
Summary: Sengoku Basara takes place during the Sengoku Period, or Warring States Period, during which Japan was split into many minor states battling over power and land. (taken directly from Wikipedia)
Comments: Yeah well, I don’t have any particular interest in another Game gone Anime series so I’ll probably pass. I’ll admit the whole “Sengoku period” thing makes me want to try it out though …

Phantom ~Requiem of Phantom~ ~ April 2nd 2009
Official Site ANN Wiki Trailer
Summary: A spate of mafia assasinations occurs in America, the work of the mysterious organization named Inferno. “Phantom” is their most strongest and capable assassin, however a lone tourist witnesses Phantom’s latest act of murder. He unwittingly exposes the top assassin’s true identity, a young girl named Ein. Witnesses are usually killed, but the man is captured and taken to be brainwashed into “Zwei”, Inferno’s newest assassin, with no memory of who he is. From this point on, Zwei is drawn into a world of conspiracy, deceit and violence. (taken from ANN)
Comments: To be honest, this series really intrigues me. It was originally a game developed by Nitroplus which is one of the rare japanese game companies I even know of. Though, that purely because Nitro+Chiral is a branch company of theirs and they developed Lamento and Togainu no Chi. There was an OVA released about five years ago for Phantom as well. Wherein Sakurai Takahiro voiced Zwei. This time around, the two main characters Ein and Zwei will be voiced by Ayahi Takagaki (Special A’s Megumi, True Tears’ Noe and Gundam 00′s Feldt) and Miyu Irino (D.NAngel’s Daisuke, Eyeshield 21′s Sena, Gundam 00′s Saji and Tsubasa Chronicle’s Syaoran) respectively. The PV looks promising but Bee Train doesn’t inspire me much hope. Nor does the fact that Tsubasa Chronicle’s director will be directing this as well.

Queen’s Blade ~Rurou no Senshi~ April 2nd 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN Wiki
Summary: In 4 years time the competition that will decide who the next Queen shall be will start. The strongest warrior will continue to rule the country according to tradition and expand it. The contestants need only be older than 12 years. They need not be human, intelligent or even of that country. The rules for the tournament are simple: murder is allowed. Any weapon can be chosen. The winner is decided when one of the participants flees or can’t move anymore. Such event is broadcasted trough a crystal sphere by the court’s magic teacher to all population to see and enjoy. (from ANN)
Comments: I read the summary and thought “Neat!” It sort of reminds me of Shaman King. Sort of. I watched the trailer and gave up a little though. If the anime’s going to be just a whole load of boobs then, I’ll pass. But, if it’s a little more than that, then I’ll give Queen’s Blade a chance. I like the idea of a bunch of girl fighting to become queen. Sounds epic. The cast is full of familiar seiyuu names like Aya Hirano, Mamiko Noto, Rie Tanaka, Kanae Ito, Rie Kugimiya and Yuki Kaida.
-
Pandora Hearts ~ April 2nd 2009
Summary: Oz Bezarius, heir to one of the duke houses, has just turned fifteen. His life is rich and carefree, darkened only by the constant absence of his father. At his coming-of-age ceremony, however, everything changes. For no reason that he can discern, he’s cast into the prison known as the “Abyss”, only to be saved by a “chain” known as Alice, the bloodstained black rabbit. Why was he cast into Abyss, how does Alice factor into it all, and what does the organization known as “Pandora” want with him? (taken from Wiki)
Comments: I read the first seven or eight chapters of the manga and loved it. I have a soft spot for fairy-tale gone bad fantasy stories so it was easy to fall for the series. The gorgeous music playing in the PV + the fact that I’ll get ToriKou and Minagawa Junko in this just further increases my love for Pandora Hearts. This is one series I’m really looking forward to because of the story and because Yuki Kajiura‘s doing the music. That’s an automatic “I want the OST” for this one.
-
Hayate no Gotoku! 2 ~ April 3rd 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN Wiki
Summary: Hayate is an unlucky guy who ends up with a massive debt because of his irresponsible parents. Nagi, a rich heiress to a wealthy family, rescues Hayate and makes him her butler. Insanity, hilarity and parodies ensue.
Comments: The past season being a 52-episode series had its ups-and-downs but, overall, I enjoyed the series enough to follow it until the very end. Maybe I’ll do it again just because its starts airing on my birthday.
-
Gokujou!! Mecha Mote Iinchou! ~ April 4th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN
Summary: Mimi Kitagami is a kind, level-headed girl who aims to be the best, coolest student council president of her high school class. However, three trouble-making boys are always causing her grief — and she has a one-sided crush on one of the boys, Ushio Tōjō. (taken from ANN)
Comments: Her eyes are huge. That hamster scares the crap out of me. If I’m in dire need for some shoujo power then I’ll watch it. I’m definitely not jumping for it though. That is, unless, I hear something interesting about it. So far, one girl, a goal and three guys isn’t enough. Or perhaps I’m lacking in an opinion because I can’t the CVs for the guys. Knowing would probably help my interest.

Valkyria Chronicles
Official Site Trailer Wiki ANN Game Site
Summary: When Imperial forces attack the small border town of Bruhl, Welkin Gunther, son of late General Belgen Gunther, is forced to fight for his life alongside Town Watch captain Alicia Melchiott. Along with Welkin’s adopted sister Isara, the three escape to Gallia’s capitol and subsequently join the country’s militia forces. As members of the newly-formed Squad 7, they must work to repel the invading Imperial forces and discover the true purpose of the invasion itself. (Game Plot from Wiki)
Comments: HIMEKA‘s (winner of the anisong Grand Prix) making her debut in this anime by singing its OP. Now, that alone is enough to make me watch this anime considering I’ve been a fan of hers for a very long time now. I didn’t know anything about this anime but I looked it up and found out it was originally a game. The anime is going to be animated by A-1 pictures (-looks around- still no Oofuri) and it has quite the cast with Inoue Marina and Chiba Susumu as the main characters and Kuwashima Houko, Sakurai Takahiro (ah! my Prince ~) and Jun Jun again.
-
Konnichiwa Anne ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN
Summary: It’s Anne of the Green Gables. Do I really need to get a summary?
Comments: Uh. I think the book was enough for me.
-
Hanasakeru Seishounen ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN
Summary: A very powerful industrialist directs his daughter to pick a husband from three candidates he has chosen for her. They are to come into her life, and their uniqueness would cause her to recognize them immediately. All three of the candidates are outstanding. Well, it’s actually four… The story evolves along the lines of a power political mystery involving a small middle eastern country.
Comments: Gosh these bishies have sharp looking eyes. But ~ there’s Jun Jun, OnoD, Namikawa Daisuke and MoriMori in the cast. Now, I think I just might watch the first three episodes for their sake. Then there’s main character whose extremely long name cracks me up. What the hell is “Kajika Louisa Kugami Burnsworth“? Is it Japanese or English? Gee. (see, I don’t even bother reading the summary of reverse harem series anymore)
-
GUIN SAGA ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN Wiki
Summary: Somewhere in the Middle Country, there roams Guin,a mysterious warrior who is revered by the people. Wearing a leopard’s mask,he has lost all the memories he held except his combat instincts and the word “Aurra”. When the people of the Middle Country is attacked by demonic creatures,it is up to Guin to save them. (taken from ANN)
Comments: White-haired twins, Tiger Man and unique character designs. Hm, interesting. I wasn’t really convinced until I watched the trailer though but, Guin Saga looks really epic. I don’t like how there’s only 13 episodes though. That scares me. There’s Yonaga Tsubasa (Oofuri’s Mihashi and S.A’s Jun) and Nakahara Mai (CLANNAD’s Nagisa and Higurashi’s Rena) as the twins Linda and Remus. Gosh, I miss Yonaga’s voice. I think I can still desperately wait for Oofuri. Hm, anyways, there’s also Nobuo Uematsu who is going to take care of the music. That’s another “I want the OST” check for this. (Ah, in case it doesn’t show; I really want to watch this)
-
Natsu no Arashi ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Wiki ANN Trailer
Summary: Thirteen-year-old Yasaka is a boy staying at his grandfather’s house during his summer vacation. One day he entered a store and met Arashi, a beautiful sixteen-year old girl working there. After trying to protect her from a man who claims to have been hired by her family to take her back by force, Yasaka ran away with her and now she stays at his grandpa’s place with him. It didn’t take much time for Yasaka to figure out that his new friend is far from an ordinary girl, as she possesses mysterious powers. The plot thickens when he finds a sixty-year-old picture of Arashi and another girl named Kaja, and to the surprise of all Kaja suddenly appears, and just like Arashi, her appearance hasn’t changed at all since then. (from Wiki)
Comments: This is just the type of supernatural that I like. Nothing attracted me on the seiyuu perspective but after reading the summary and seeing that SHAFT is animating this, well … I’m curious now.
-
Full Metal Alchemist/Hagane no Renkinjutsushi ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN Wiki
Summary: BONES is doing a remake of the 2003 FMA anime series that’s supposedly going to follow the manga more closely than its predecessor. After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al’s soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still trapped in the armor) leave their childhood home, each brother concerned with the other’s happiness. Ed, who has a natural talent and skill for alchemy, becomes nationally certified and is soon known everywhere as the “Fullmetal Alchemist.” Their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher’s Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone. (from ANN; the first FMA series)
Comments: This is probably what I’m looking the most forward to this season. More FMA? I tripped at the first hint of it. I loved the first series. It was beautiful. I haven’t read much of the manga but I read enough to know the important differences between it and the anime. I prefer the anime. FMA is the only series I preferred the English Dub over the original voices. Obviously, I’m also looking forward to FUNimation taking it and dubbing it so I can hear Vic as Ed, Aaron as Al and Travis as Roy all over again. Not to say I disliked Romi Paku and Rie Kugimiya, I just liked Vic and Aaron more.
Recently, it was announced that there is a slight change in cast for this remake. Honestly, I only really care about Miki Shinnichirou voicing Roy this time. Yay!

Tears to Tiara ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Trailer Wiki ANN Game OP
Summary: A Demon King named Arawn was sealed away for 1,000 years. After a girl named Rhiannon (Ri-a-n-no-n) released him, they started to travel together and she becomes emotionally attached to him. (from Wiki)
Comments: Another game adaptation … except that this one actually interests me. The OP is sung by Suara who I know sang the OP for Asatte no Houko and one of the endings for Kimikiss. I like her so that’s one point. Though, there’s a minus point with the fact that Yuko Goto (S.A’s Hikari and Haruhi Suzumiya’s Mikuru) and Tooru Ohkawa (Soul Eater’s Death Scythe and FMA 2003′s Roy). I don’t hate them but my most recent experience of the two weren’t favorable. Goto with S.A and Ohkawa with a certain drama CD. But the two did some good work as well so I won’t let my bias stop me from watching at least an episode of this because it sounds interesting.

Then, at the opening ceremony of the new school year, an equally mysterious girl named Mashiro appears before Mito. Mashiro is somehow tied to the relic and the legend of Tayutayu-sama (from MAL)

Saki ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN Wiki
Summary: Saki Miyanagi, a high school freshman, hates mahjong because her family would always force her to play it and punish her regardless of if she won or lost. Because of this, she learned how to keep her score at zero, neither winning nor losing. However, her friend from middle school convinces her to join the school’s Mahjong Club. After the Club discovers her ability, they recruit her and convince her to win instead of breaking even. She easily does so with her skill, so the team enters a mahjong tournament so that its members may reach the national competitions. (from Wiki)
Comments: What are you talking about? This isn’t Mahjong! Or is it? Well, it’s GONZO so I’m not surprised about the epic-looking Mahjong game scenes. Actually, I think it’s pretty cool but I’m weary of GONZO. But, I like Mahjong. I spy a bunch of female seiyuu plus Jun Jun in this one; like Ami Koshimizu, Kugimiya Rie, Kana Ueda (as Saki), Shizuka Itou and Ryoko Shiraishi. From the trailer, I’m guess we’ll be getting some Saki+Pink-haired girl here too. Ah ~ the effects of rain!

Cross Game ~ April 5th 2009
Official Site Trailer ANN Wiki
Summary: Koh Kitamura is a fifth grader whose family runs a sporting goods store. One of the regular customers of his family’s store is the Tsukishima Batting Center, and so he gets to know the four daughters of the Tsukishima family (Ichiyo, Wakaba, Aoba, and Momiji) very well. Since Koh has spent so much time practicing in their batting cages, he has become a genius hitter, but has no knowledge of any other aspect of baseball. This is in contrast to Aoba, who, despite being a year younger, is an adept pitcher and hitter. Wakaba is a classmate of Koh’s, and she seems fully intent on marrying him when she grows up. All seems idyllic in their world, until tragedy strikes. The story then skips ahead to four years later, as Koh has continued the training he began four years ago, but has not played in a baseball game since. As he finally begins playing again, it remains to be seen whether or not he will live up to the expectations of those who know the true talent he has been hiding all this time. (from ANN, manga page)
Comments: Baseball. Well, obviously I’m watching this. Major has been boring me since Goro went to America and back to Japan so I’m in need of something new. I’m looking forward to this but there’s a lack of information on the anime. I’ll be sure to check out the manga as well.

And who is the military’s Chief-of-Staff Ayanami exactly. Teito’s future seems to have spiraled into an unexpectedly perilous path. (taken from ANN)
Comments: I first heard of 07 Ghost quite a few months before the anime was announced through a friend. I read a couple of chapters and really liked it but I just didn’t get hooked. Though, the anime has rekindled my interest in the series. This is another type of story I really enjoy. I love gothic fantasy. Well, fantasy and supernatural in general really. Plus, there’s a long list of seiyuu I love that’ll be in this anime. Namely, Saiga Mistuki (as Teito), Hayami Sho (as Ayanami), Suwabe Junichi (as Frau) and Chiba Susumu (as Castor). For the rest, there’s Miyata Kouki, Daisaku, Nakai Kazuya, Miyu Irino, Takahashi Hiroki and Hatano Wataru.

BASQUASH! ~ April 2009

Summary: Sports and sci-fi anime production involving characters playing basketball while riding mecha. This new series premise was created by Thomas Romain and Shoji Kawamori, with the animation produced by Satelight. The project direction is being handled by Shoji Kawamori, while the series direction will be done by Shin Itagaki.
Comments: I thought “Wow. Epic! Basketball + mecha? That’s just awesome.” So there, interest on a scale of 1 to 10; 5. I looked up the trailer and found Iceman. “A cool-looking chara! Interest up!” Then finally, I checked out the cast. Which is rare, because the cast is what I look up first under normal circumstances. Anyways ~ Shimo-chan‘s voicing the main character Dan! That’s an immediate “I’m definitely watching this.” I’m so biased haha. Plus, Iceman is going to be voiced by You-kyan. That’s even better. Ah and, another point of interest, Megumi Nakajima (Ranka!) is voicing a character here as well! (And is it me, or is Satelight putting out quite a few things this season?)

Comments: I didn’t watch the first season and I probably won’t watch this one no matter how adorably cute it looks like.

Ristorante Paradiso ~ April 2009
Summary: 21 year-old Nicoletta leaves her grandparents’ home in the countryside to work in Rome at a restaurant owned by her estranged mother’s lover. But something sets the popular and elegant Casetta Dell’orso apart from its rivals: the entire restaurant is staffed by older gentlemen wearing glasses (as per her mother’s preference). Thrown into this adult world, Nicoletta must try to find personal and professional stability – things that become increasingly difficult to achieve as she falls under the spell of Casetta Dell’orso. (from MAL)
Comments: I’m going to watch this because it involves Italian cooking. Plus, I get the feeling I’m going to really like this one. My instincts about certain things like this are usually right. How can I dislike an elegant looking anime involving food? There’s also the fact that this reminds me of Bartender. I loved the series even though I haven’t gotten pass episode 3 due to a lack of time. (Gosh I love the violin in the PV)

Ah. As usual, I’ve expressed interest in the majority of the series I included. This is mostly due to the fact that I think a lot of things are awesome and the fact that I usually enjoy what I think I might not enjoy. Anyways, here’s my Spring 2009 in a Nutshell:
The “Must” list:
La Corda D’oro, Pandora Hearts, Full Metal Alchemist, 07 Ghost, K-ON, Tsubasa Chronicle: Shunraiki and DOGS: Bullets and Carnage
The “Bound to really Awesome” list:
Shangri-La, Eden of the East and Basquash!
The “I’m extremely interested” list:
Guin Saga, Natsu no Arashi, Valkyria Chronicles, Saki, Cross Game and Ristorant Paradiso

I’m probably going to end up with max. 8 series by May; then, 4 series by June/July, as usual. When will Spring stop being awesome?

Amazing. You’re the first blogger I’ve seen who read Pandora Hearts.
Wow, do you have information on all the anime airing this Spring? So much~ I can’t even quite go through it all (I don’t have the time now, but later! And I’ll definitely be checking back for anything else you add).
And another person that read some chapters of Pandora Hearts. I can’t remember reading it that well, but I really remember liking it. Like you said, I have a soft spot for fairytale gone bad stories…oh heck, I love all fairytales.
Seems like you’re going to be checking out a lot of stuff this season though. Does that mean you’ll blog more of less I wonder~ More inspiration, but less time. Hmm…though as usual, things are bound to be dropped, aren’t they? (Agh I always feel so hesitant to drop anything because then it makes me feel like I waste my time, lol)
You had me at “FMA 2″ …
7 main guys in La corda now O.o
I was wondering why it took so long for them to think of a coupling for the girl XD (its because they need to think partners for all the others
)
Well one guy for the girl and the rest will be couples with one another
I’ll definetly watch 07 ghost and Resturante Paradiso and perhaps Hanasakeru Seishounen
thanks for bloggin ^^
