“The meaning of Nowaki is Typhoon … one day taking you in and, before realize, fall.”
Junjo Romantica 03 …. Junjo Egoist 01
叩けよさらば開かれん (Tatake yo Sareba “HIRAKAREN”)
Junjo Egoist has finally arrived! Before I get on with the summary, I just have to mention that time’s been turned back to six years ago, I believe. I elaborate further when it is needed. (Well, you don’t really HAVE to know time’s been turned back … but then you would be confused about why Hiro shows up in episode two when in this episode Hiro and Usagi haven’t spoken in a long while)
The episode starts with immediate yaoi action. It’s Hiroki flashbacking to when he and Usagi (blindfolded) had sex. Hiroki told Usagi to pretend that he was his “beloved Takahiro”. All is well until Usagi mentions Takahiro’s name and the flashback ends and the OP starts. Poor, poor Hiroki.
While in the midst of his thoughts, a plastic rocket falls right in front of Hiro snapping him brutally away from his thoughts. Nowaki then comes through the bushes and stumbles a crying Hiroki. Surprised, Nowaki introduces himself curtly and drags a confused Hiroki away. Our seme brings Hiroki to a old-man trio who greet him and give him a drink. Nowaki then pats Hiro’s head telling him everything’s okay. The action subsequently reminding Hiro of Usagi.
Hiro then has a nice chat with the old men (who give him the nickname “Hiro-tan” HAHA) and learns that Nowaki’s been abandoned as a child without a name and that his name comes from the word “Typhoon” because he was found at the orphanage doorstep during a heavy storm. He also learns that Nowaki started working right after graduating. The old men also comment that people as good as Nowaki should be happy to which Hiro bitterly thinks “Even I want to be happy”
Nowaki then follows Hiro home using the excuse that he’s worried about Hiro because he was crying before. Hiro tells him it’s none of his business but Nowaki keeps talking. This time, asking Hiro to become his tutor because he wants to go to school. Hiro tries to get Nowaki to go away but fails and Nowaki ends up following him all the way home where he tricks Hiro and steals his house key. Pissed, Hiro decides to go to sleep.
The next morning, he wakes up to Nowaki’s face. With a total tsundere-like attitude, Hiro orders Nowaki to get out right now and leave the key. Unfazed, Nowaki tells Hiro he made breakfast. After seeing the feast, Hiro gives up and lets Nowaki stay. While they eat, Hiro asks why Nowaki wants him to be his tutor so bad. Nowaki replies “Don’t you know?” to which Hiro answers “No I don’t” After a pause, Nowaki says “Hm, I wonder why”
(Yeah well, most obviously Nowaki DOES know why. He’s just not saying anything and Hiro’s just being dense about it)
Then, while Nowaki takes care of the dishes, Hiro starts thinking about how Nowaki’s hand reminds him of Usagi (since they both do the patting thing). Hiro tells himself to get it together because his love for Usagi will never be returned. Short flashback (AGAIN?!) and Hiro throws a quick glance to Nowaki who looks back surprising Hiro who knocks over a tower of books. In a flash, Nowaki covers for him saying “I finally did something for you”. Pissed (and all tsundere like aww) runs away from Nowaki’s embrace and tells him not to get all confident. In the end though, Hiro finally agrees to become Nowaki’s tutor.
(Actually, what Nowaki really says is “I finally did something that gained me a favor” which is why Hiro told Nowaki not to get over-confident)
While the two pick up the books, Nowaki pats Hiro’s head again and tells him he’s cute. Pissed again, Hiro starts throwing books at Nowaki and complains that he’s too tall. Nowaki tells him he’s 186cm tall and Hiro complains so more.
With a non-existent transition, we skip to some days later. Hiro comes back home to find Nowaki asleep. Hiro then compares him to Usagi and concludes that the two are nothing alike except for one similarity (head patting!). Nowaki wakes up and goes off to wash his face while Hiro checks his work. He’s surprised to see that all the answers are correct.
After, the two have a conversation that I more or less understood. It’s something about Hiro staying at the university and that he’s a top student. Nowaki smiles and says “As expected from Hiro-san!”. Hiro becomes all flushed and Nowaki tells him that “Hiro-san is awesome” ..,
(Hiro’s falling fast. Really.)
Hiro then notices an open book on the table and identifies it as one of Usagi’s books. Nowaki then notes that Hiro must like the author because he was three copies of each books and that their neatly placed unlike the others. Nowaki asks Hiro if he’s ever met Usagi. Hiro replies that Usagi’s his childhood friend. That said, Nowaki immediately understands everything (everything meaning the fact that Hiro loves Usagi)
While Hiro replies, he also thinks “the person I love … no … the person I loved” this already giving away what we already knew. Hiro loves Nowaki nao!
In his thoughts again, Hiro thinks about Usagi and much he relates him when it comes to one-sided love. I.E. Usagi to Takahiro and Hiro to Usagi.
Some few days later, Nowaki comes out from the shower to a sleeping Hiro and decides to take advantage of the situation by giving Hiro a kiss. Hiro wakes up but before he has enough time to get an explanation and before Nowaki can fully confess … the door bell rings
(Reminder, this episode happens around 6 years before the events of episode one)
Usagi: So you were alive
Hiro: What you say?
Usagi: You won’t even call and I can’t contact you at the university. I thought you went and died. (Not sure about the last line. But I guess it’s something to that effect)
Hiro: Too bad. I don’t have time to play around with a best-selling author. Of course I can’t see you, my feelings still haven’t calmed.
Usagi: Don’t say that. I’ve been worried. Are you eating properly? Your face color’s off.
Hiro: Akihiko is .. kind. That’s why I can’t take it. Don’t touch me. Don’t call my name with that voice. Don’t be kind to me.
Nowaki: Excuse me. I’ll be taking Hiro-san.
I just had to translate that part. I absolutely LOVED everything about it. Probably because they didn’t resort to another flashback like normal. I’ve had enough of flash backs.
Back inside, Nowaki confesses. He says that he fell for Hiro at first sight and that he quit his jobs just to have more time with him. He also says that he fell for Hiro’s crying face but he wants to see him smile. He then asks if he can become Usagi’s replacement. Hiro gets pissed and throws Nowaki out.
Sometime later, Hiro is at a café in front of the flower shop Nowaki works out. He tells himself that he just got there back accident and that is by no reason that he actually cares about Nowaki. Hiro looks up and sees two girls flirting with Nowaki and has a completely jealous reaction to it. Realizing that, Hiro shuts himself off depressed. That’s when Nowaki realizes Hiro was there but before he can do anything, Hiro escapes.
Later that evening … well, what do you want to know? Everything’s resolved.
Nowaki says he was really happy that Hiro came to see him. Hiro acts a little tsundere about everything but eventually gives into his own feelings. The two have not so hot smex.
Some time later again, Nowaki receives some flowers from Hiro to congratulate him on … I can’t remember what really …
This episodes after the credits scene skips to six years later when Hiro receives a letter from Nowaki saying that he’s coming back from New York soon. Basically, Nowaki left for America for SIX YEARS without any word to Hiro. Yes. Six years.
Yeah. This episode made me go trigger happy and my summary is kinda rushed sorry but you get the basic point. Anyways, I’m really glad with that his episode came out. Sadly, the amount of flashbacks still bother me … a lot … but I’m dealing. My two favorite scenes this episode is Usagi’s appearance and Hiro stalking Nowaki. EGOIST 4TW!
Egoist stories are definitely more “dramatic” and “plot-filled” than Romanticas (which is mostly comedy) which is probably why Egoist is much more engaging than Romantica but I still love them both equally.
Oh yeah, another complaint, the H-scene went from lacking sound to going completely mute. It’s just a picture now, not even movement. I understand that the Egoist h-scenes are a bar higher than Romantica’s but is there really the to censor it THAT much? At that rate, it’s the same as manga. But since the H-scene isn’t this series’ vocal point (there’s a lot of them albeit) I’m won’t complain too much.
Next episode is a Romantica episode! It’s finally Aikawa’s turn to appear ~ (OMG! MISAKI BISHIUKE FACE?!)
