As guess by Yuu last week, this week’s character is none other than Ichinomiya Kantarou from the manga and anime Tactics created by Sakura Kinoshita (creator of Matantei Loki Ragnarok) and Kazuko Higashiyama.
It’s Monday again and it’s the second round of my Top Ten Anime Guys. So I say, but most of this post was written last Wednesday. -cough-cough- I couldn’t contain my Kantarou-love and ended up writing this post way too early …
Unlike Tamaki, Kantarou isn’t as widely known … as far as I know at least.
Anyways, here’s the basic breakdown for Kantarou: He’s (more or less) the main character of Tactics. He’s a folklorist, writer and exorcist and is probably in his early twenties despite his appearance. Since he was a kid, he’s had the ability to see youkai and because of that he was shunned by everyone much like many other characters in anime with the same ability. He grew up being friends with youkai and always had the dream of capturing the all powerful demon/ogre-eating tengu who he was going to name: Haruka.
Oh yeah, and he’s voice by Kouki Miyata.
#9 Ichinomiya Kantarou
When I bought the first volume of the manga and saw Kantarou on the cover, I thought he was going to be one those cheery, happy-go-lucky characters. Then I actually read the manga and it turns out he’s a devious asshole who loves money a little more than he should. But then I watched the anime and it turns out, once again, that there’s more to Kantarou than meets the eye.
If Kantarou was just cute and devious, he would never had made it onto this list. Moreover, he wouldn’t have made it in a spot beating Tamaki. The thing about Kantarou is that he’s a much more complex character than people give him credit for in the beginning.
He has many faces to him and we’re never quite sure what’s his real self. Kantarou‘s at times immature and childish, as if being true to his appearance. This happens often when he’s drunk or arguing with Hatsumi. He’s also the devious money-lover (moreso in the manga) who has everyone fooled with his false words and sincerity. He also tricks and forces Youko and Haruka into doing a lot of his bidding. At other times, Kantarou is seen to be angsty, for lack of a better word. Despite his other facades, Kantarou doesn’t like others to be worried about him. He hides his worries and anxieties inside and buries them within himself by acting cheerful or devious. There are many more facets to Kantarou, but I don’t want to get into all of them in-depth.
I’d like to say that it’s because Kantarou‘s such a complex character that he’s made it onto this list but I’d be lying if I said that. The main reason he’s ninth is because he reminds me myself sometimes. Not only in that we’re both writers that procrastinates too much or that we’re both devious money-lovers or that we’re both way too immature at times …. but because we both we use those sides of our personality to hide what worries and hurts us.
Depsite himself, Kantarou really cares about the people around him and doesn’t want to hurt them at all. In the anime, it only happens once that his facades are completely useless to hide what’s bothering him and that’s when Haruka leaves him.
When that happened, Kantarou is seen moping around uselessly and burying himself with work. He doesn’t go after Haruka despite knowing where he is and that he can bring him back. He won’t admit it openly but, Kantarou was afraid of having Haruka with him against Haruka’s own will. When he was a child, the only thing that kept Kantarou going was the thought of finding Haruka. Haruka was his idol you could say. He was the person that gave Kantarou strength when he needed it and Kantarou was afraid of losing that. I would say that’s all, but it isn’t. Sure, Kantarou’s objective at first was having Haruka by his side because he thought he’d be stronger that way … but as time passed, it became different and the two developed a deep bond. Through some eyes, it’s just really strong friendship, through others, it’s love. Either way, there’s no one who can deny that Haruka and Kantarou have a strong bond. But I digress, I’m sort of falling off topic.
At least that explains the second reason Kantarou’s on this list: his relationship (be it love or friendship) with Haruka.
So, while I’m still on Haruka, let me explain once again why Kantarou made it on this list and Haruka did not. Actually, I don’t have many reasons this time. Unlike the Hikaru and Kaoru, I have perfectly reasonable reasons to like Haruka. Yes, he’s hot. Yes, he’s slashable with Kantarou. But I love him further than that. Yes, he’s voiced by my cold king Sakurai-sama. But I love him even further than that.
Like Kantarou, Haruka has many facets to him as well (most characters in Tactics are more complex than meets the eye) though I think this is seen mostly in the manga than in the anime where 95% of the time he was the cool and handsome prince. I haven’t read past the first volume, but there’s a glimpse of uncool/drunk Haruka in it and that was enough to have me completely head over heels for the guy. Wow, I’m so biased.
But it comes down to this: Kantarou is really really cute. Less cuter than a lot of the ones in my list to come but still really cute. I’d be fool to lie and say I didn’t have a sort of shotacon. I love cute/effeminate men. Call it a disease or whatever but it’s true. This is the main reason why Kantarou won over Haruka. Haruka’s hot but I’m biased towards the cute guys so there.
If someone were to ask me my tastes in guys, I’d reply that he HAD to be cute one way or another. There isn’t a single character (male or female) that I like that isn’t cute in some way … except for one (because now that I think of it, he isn’t cute in the slightest)
By the way, when I say cute, I mean it like moe.
I’m going to pray I don’t use the “HE’S DAMN CUTE!” reason every week since it’s so biased … but I’m pretty sure it’s going to show up for most of the guys. As I said, there’s only one guy on my list who probably isn’t qualified to be called cute in my eyes.
Anyways, so that’s it for Kantarou. He’s cute, devious, loves money, is nearly my double and most important of all he’s cute … and wow this post ended up being longer than Tamaki’s … but I digress …
Here’s hints for next week’s character:
The anime this character is from started airing in the year 2000. He has a puppy-like personality and has an extreme sweet tooth.
(Hopefully I’m vague enough with my hints this time)
