Maiden Rose OVA 1 – Giant Chins can kill!

Maiden Rose introduces “giant chins can fuck a person to death”.

If you understood what I just said, you know you’re already broken inside.

Hyakujitsu no Bara was originally a manga by Fusanosuke Inariya gone Drama CD and now Anime. I listened to the drama CD so long ago that all I remember is the non-con and violent sex, but I’ve read the manga recently enough to remember the story. If “non-con” and “violent” didn’t hit you yet, let me tell that Maiden Rose isn’t a quiet walk in the park with a happy gay couple frolicking through the flowers. (Not that you’d see that anywhere anyway.)

Summary:

So what’s the story with this? Well, let’s use the wonderful extra from the OVA to explain this in a nutshell.

Long ago, Taki met Klaus in a dramatic forbidden love at first sight. Reason number one? Shota. Reason number two? Their two countries are about to go to war. Reason number three? They’re both men.

Taki decides he wants Klaus as his knight but the old fart trio are extremely against this idea for the, well, obvious reasons.

Klaus isn’t very happy that the old farts are taking him lightly so he decides to prove his worth. How?

By beating up a few of the enemies (his kin, by the way) who ironically show up for  an attack.  (Klaus is so totally badass on his motorcycle.)

Taki does the adorable “sparkling” chibi!Bishie face that breaks the limits of Klaus’ sanity causing him to go pedobear on our adorable little kitten ~ nya!

And that’s the story in a nutshell. You’d think I was watching a comedy instead of the angsty and dramatic thing that is Maiden Rose. I’ll try to stop making this crack. -enters serious mode-

Impressions:

Both the OVA and manga are equally good in my mind. Though, since the OVA makes Taki seem like an asshole, I’ll stick with liking the manga. In the OVA, Taki’s affections towards Klaus is a little more subtle. Hell, practically invisible. OVA!Taki seems like he’s trapped between wanting Klaus by his side and pushing him completely away. Manga!Taki is decided on keeping Klaus at his side. Of course, manga!Taki is still an asshole but in a different sense.

Ah well, all is forgiven because Taki is absolutely gorgeous. Totally emo. But absolutely gorgeous.

And Klaus? Without the dog ears he is of no worth to me. His chin’s too large.

The first rape

Yes I’ve heard the story about rape games getting banned in Japan. I tried imagining if they banned rape from manga and Drama CDs … That’s actually scary considering how much rape/non-con is in yaoi works.

Wait, this doesn’t have anything to do with Maiden Rose does it?

The “OMG ATTACK” scenes

OVA!Taki has this impression that Klaus is always at his side when he needs him. I don’t think he’s aware of that impression though. Manga!Taki is aware of it though. In the OVA, they still had the dramatic scene where Taki tears up when he thought Klaus “died” but it was actually quite different in the manga.

Manga!Taki tells Klaus “Don’t leave me again” and “Don’t go where I can’t see you” which shows Taki’s possessiveness over Klaus. OVA!Taki doesn’t say anything. He actually just ignores Klaus and moves on. Though, there are strong hints of Taki just being tsun tsun about it. Possible.

(I find myself laughing everytime I try comparing Maiden Rose to Valkyria Chronicle. They are similiar … but that’s not why I’m laughing. I’m laughing because Welkin and Taki are both voiced by Chiba Susumu.)

Klaus’ story

They didn’t go much into it in the OVA and I can understand why. His reasons are fairly obvious after all. Taki said he wanted Klaus as his knight and Klaus willingly abandoned everything to stay by Taki’s side. Now, if this isn’t love on Klaus’ part then I don’t know what it is. (And of course, in all your typical yaoi stories, love often leads to raping the poor little uke)

The second rape

Klaus is obviously frustrated. For good reason too! After all, it was Taki that first said “I want you [as my knight]” and now Taki’s the one pushing him away. If I were seme, I’d definitely be frustrated in this situation as well.

But Why? Why on earth would Taki do that? Obvious reason is obvious, but the OVA won’t touch it until next time I guess.

Spoiler: The Reizen family have been revered by their kin for a long time. They are admired and respected and are to remain pure. Sort of like gods, really. The first time Klaus and Taki had sex (seen as flashback in the OVA), it was consensual. Or at least not full on rape like the next times. Anyways, Taki probably felt really disgusted with himself afterwards and, despite having feelings for Klaus, decided he had to push him away. Of course, sir Giant Chin wasn’t going to just take that was he? Thus, raperaperapeandmorerape.

Ending

This is where you should exlaim “OMG WHAT TAKI IS DEAD?!” … or “OMGWHAT!? HE SERIOUSLY FUCKED HIM TO DEATH!?” This is where I started laughing maniacally only to later cry because of how sick I think I am to be laughing at something so tragic. I can’t take these things seriously anymore. Maybe it’s Hetalia’s fault.

Anyways, I don’t think I need to say it but I’ll do it anyway … Taki isn’t dead. If he were dead, there wouldn’t be a next OVA. So obviously, Taki’s alive. It’s like that Naruto movie where the trailer made it seem like Naruto died … and as much as I wish that were true, it’ll never happen will it? (Won’t Kishimoto be nice and kill him off already? I’m tired of hearing people talk about Naruto around me. Why don’t we all sit for a cup of tea and enjoy some Mushi-shi instead?)

A little Extra: The Real Reason Taki pushes Klaus Away

“Damnit. Why Taki?! Why do you push me away when you’re the one who first said you wanted me?!”

“ANSWER ME!”

“T-that … That’s because … You’re …”

“YOUR CHIN’S TOO BIG FOR ME!”

Uh, moving on, I actually really really really liked this OVA … just in case this vague post didn’t show that. I love Taki and Klaus despite his giant chin.

As a short side note, if you liked Maiden Rose and want to check out more of Fusanosuke Inariya’s work expecting they’ll sort be like Maiden Rose … then, watch out. Compared to her other works, Maiden Rose is actually pretty tame. Her art is beautiful but some may call her story ideas a little odd. But hey, if you’re as broken as me, you’ll probably love them.
